CUPE Saskatchewan stands firm against child care cuts

CUPE Saskatchewan President Kent Peterson joined Early Learning and Childcare Shadow Minister Joan Pratchler this morning as she launched a new campaign for people to send a message to Education Minister Everett Hindley demanding affordable child care.

On July 1, Scott Moe’s government introduced child care cuts, including eliminating funding for part-time and casual child care spaces, freezing the creation of new spaces, introducing new fees to families, and restricting tuition-free funding for early childhood educators.

“Saskatchewan families deserve better than this,” said Peterson. “They deserve a government that’s focused on expanding and strengthening child care. Scott Moe’s government is dismantling a system that families and communities rely on.”

Pratchler said she has heard from many people concerned about the impact of the cuts and wanted to provide a way for them to make their voices heard.

“These decisions are shortsighted and have the potential to ruin whole communities in Saskatchewan. We can’t let this stand – it’s time for change.”

People can send a message to Minister Hindley here.

CUPE is Saskatchewan’s child care union, representing more than 300 child care workers across the province and more than 12,000 across the country.
