CUPE 2348: expand—don’t cut—assisted living

As more than a dozen assisted living workers face the threat of layoffs at Devon House, CUPE 2348 is calling for greater protections, not a reduction, for crucial community support workers.

“Community support workers are the front-line care providers working directly with vulnerable communities and deserve to be treated fairly and with respect by our employer,” said
Kelly Kirby, a steward with CUPE 2348 representing members at Devon House.

Two CUPE members have already been laid off, and the Union has learned that as many as 17 additional workers – including full-time, part-time and casual employees – may follow as Special People in Kildonan East (SPIKE) moves to close one of its supportive living homes in the area.

“Community support and assisted living are crucial services that improve the lives of people living with disabilities,” said Gina McKay, President of CUPE Manitoba. “SPIKE should recognize that it is the front-line workers who provide the round-the-clock care and have the most direct impact on the lives of these community members. They deserve respect from their employer, not threats of losing their jobs.”

Members of CUPE 2348 held an information picket at 11:00 a.m. today (October 15) outside the SPIKE main office at 1940 Henderson Highway, calling on SPIKE to protect their jobs.
